The Scottish
Golf Environment Group (SGEG) was set up to help golf clubs protect
the natural heritage of their golf courses. Led by the Scottish
Golf Union, The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, and
Scottish Natural Heritage the group aims to encourage environmental
awareness.
The project
is supported by a wide range of golfing and environmental organisations
in both the public and private sector, giving it a unique platform
of partners on which to base its activities.
We are striving to promote and encourage sustainable management
of golf courses for the benefit of the game and the environment, and
to establish ways of helping clubs play a proactive role in their
natural and cultural heritage.
The Scottish Golf Environment Group recognises the importance of safeguarding
these permanent green spaces for future generations.
What do we do?
- We can offer
free advice and assistance to clubs, Local Authorities and greenkeepers
in drawing up environmental management plans as well as providing information
on grants and other sources of project funding.
- We also produce,
distribute and encourage the use of information on best environmental
management practice.
- Our strategy
has involved developing and distributing environmental educational publications and materials to assist course
managers.
- We also contribute
to greenkeeper and environmental training.
It all adds
up to a determined effort to protect the natural heritage of our
golf courses and to maintain Scotland's reputation as home to some
of the world's most beautiful and challenging courses.
